Prayer is the heartbeat of evangelism. Without it, we are attempting to carry out the mission of God in our own strength, which can lead to burnout, frustration, and minimal spiritual fruit. Evangelism is not just a method or a strategy; it is a divine assignment that requires the intervention and empowerment of God. Prayer is how we align ourselves with God’s heart and access His power for the task of sharing the gospel. In John 15:5, Jesus reminds us, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” This is especially true in evangelism. Without prayer, our efforts remain powerless, but through prayer, God moves mightily.
1. Prayer Prepares the Heart for Evangelism
Before we step out to share the gospel, we must first come before God in prayer. Prayer helps prepare our hearts and the hearts of those we will encounter. Evangelism is a spiritual endeavor, and prayer ensures that we are spiritually ready.

In prayer, we ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with boldness, guide our conversations, and anoint our words. It is the Spirit who gives us the right words to say (Luke 12:12) and empowers our witness to be effective. As we pray, we invite the Holy Spirit to take control, to work through us, and to reach the hearts of those who hear.

4. Prayer Sustains the Evangelist
Evangelism can be challenging. We face rejection, spiritual warfare, and the discouragement of not always seeing immediate results. But prayer is our lifeline, sustaining us through the ups and downs of sharing the gospel. When we rely on prayer, we find renewed strength, perseverance, and joy in the midst of the struggle.
In Colossians 4:2-4, Paul encourages believers to “devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ.” Notice that Paul, a seasoned evangelist, relied heavily on prayer. He understood that prayer was the source of his endurance and effectiveness in ministry.

We may share the gospel, but it is God who changes hearts. Prayer brings us to the point of surrender, where we acknowledge that we are not responsible for converting anyone—that is God’s work. Our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim the message, and prayer invites God to take care of the results.
In 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, Paul writes, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” This passage reminds us that success in evangelism is not measured by our efforts but by God’s work through those efforts. Prayer invites God to transform the seeds we plant into lasting spiritual fruit.
- Pray for a Harvest of Souls: Ask God to bring about a harvest of souls through your evangelistic efforts (Matthew 9:37-38).
- Pray for Long-Term Impact: Pray that the seeds of the gospel would take root and produce a lasting transformation in the lives of those who hear (Matthew 13:23).

It prepares us for the work, softens the hearts of those who hear, invites the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, sustains us through challenges, and transforms the results of our efforts.
